How to Grow Helenium

  • Position: Full sun. Helenium need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for the best flowering.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Helenium dislike drought and waterlogging equally. They thrive in moisture-retentive but not waterlogged conditions.
  • Planting: Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants 45–60cm apart.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially in dry spells. Helenium will wilt in drought and may not recover fully.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring for the best growth and flowering.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7).

How to Prune & Maintain Helenium

  • Chelsea chop: cut plants back by half in late May to delay flowering, encourage bushier growth and reduce the need for staking.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to extend the flowering season.
  • Cut back to the ground in late autumn or early spring.
  • Divide congested clumps every 2–3 years in spring — helenium decline quickly if left undivided.

Helenium for Pollinators

Helenium are outstanding pollinator plants, providing a rich nectar source for bees, butterflies and hoverflies from midsummer through to autumn. Their open, accessible flowerheads are particularly valuable for short-tongued insects. Several varieties are RHS Plants for Pollinators approved.
