How to Grow Astrantia
- Position: Partial shade to full sun. Astrantia prefer dappled or partial shade, especially in drier gardens. In reliably moist soil they will tolerate full sun.
- Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Astrantia dislike drought — mulch generously to retain moisture.
- Planting: Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants 45cm apart.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially in dry spells. Astrantia will wilt dramatically in drought but usually recover quickly once watered.
- Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7).
How to Prune & Maintain Astrantia
- Deadhead spent flowers promptly to encourage a long succession of blooms from early summer through to autumn.
- Cut back hard after the first flush of flowers for a strong second flush later in the season.
- Leave some seedheads to self-seed — astrantia produce attractive seedlings, though named varieties may not come true.
- Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.
Astrantia for Pollinators
Astrantia are outstanding pollinator plants. Their intricate flowerheads provide a rich nectar source for bees, hoverflies and butterflies over a long season. They are particularly valuable in partially shaded gardens where pollinator-friendly plants can be harder to find.
Astrantia for Cutting Gardens
Astrantia make beautiful, long-lasting cut flowers with an intricate, jewel-like quality that works beautifully in both informal and structured arrangements. Cut when the flowers are fully open for the longest vase life. They also dry well, retaining their papery bracts and delicate structure.
