Types of Veronica

  • Veronica spicata (Spiked Speedwell) – Upright spikes of densely packed flowers in blue, pink or white from early to midsummer. Compact and well-behaved, ideal for the front to middle of a sunny border.
  • Veronica longifolia – Taller than spicata, with longer flower spikes in blue or white. Flowers from midsummer into autumn. Excellent for prairie-style planting.
  • Veronica gentianoides – Pale blue flowers in early summer above low rosettes of glossy foliage. One of the earliest veronicas to flower.
  • Veronica austriaca subsp. teucrium – Sprawling habit with vivid blue flowers in early summer. Excellent for the front of a border or tumbling over low walls.

How to Grow Veronica

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade. Best flowering in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Veronica dislike waterlogged conditions but are otherwise unfussy and adaptable.
  • Planting: Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants 30–45cm apart.
  • Watering: Water during the first growing season. Once established, veronica are reasonably drought-tolerant.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK (RHS H7).

How to Prune & Maintain Veronica

  • Deadhead spent flower spikes promptly to encourage a second flush of blooms.
  • Cut back to the ground in late autumn or early spring.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.

Veronica for Pollinators

Veronica are excellent pollinator plants, attracting bees, butterflies and hoverflies with their nectar-rich flower spikes. They are particularly valuable in early to midsummer when competition for pollinators is high. Several varieties are RHS Plants for Pollinators approved.

Veronica in Prairie & Cottage Garden Planting

Veronica combine beautifully with achillea, salvia, echinacea, geranium and ornamental grasses in both traditional cottage garden borders and contemporary prairie-style schemes. Their upright habit provides valuable vertical contrast to mound-forming and spreading perennials.
