Hardy, evergreen perennial which keeps a low covering of foliage through winter.
Achillea is useful genus wit many of the garden worthy plants coming from the species millefolium. The plants are generally clump forming with a slow spreading habit with feathery, narrow leaves of a grey-green colour.
Flat, clustered heads of flowers appear in June and can be in a range of colours from pink through to red and purple, the flower heads are made up of many small flowers with a yellow center to each.
Achillea is native to most of Europe and West Asia over to the Himalayas, it is naturalised through North America, Australia and New Zealand. Generally growing in meadows and dry grassy places.
Achillea go well with many other garden plants particularly with Alchemilla mollis, Salvia nemorosa, Echinacea purpurea and soft grasses like Stipa tenuissima. Prairie plantings is where Achellia really shine and they will have multiple flowerings if trimmed regularly. Plants are drought tolerant and not too fussy, happy in poorer soils but will grow in any type of soil.
