Agapanthus Queen Anne

Agapanthus Queen Anne is a unique selection from A. praecox subs. orientalis, known for its compact habit and stunning pale blue flowers with lilac stripes. This hardy, evergreen perennial will provide a beautiful display of flowers from June to September, reaching a height of 60cm and a spread of 80cm. Its glossy green, strap-like leaves add to its overall appeal.

This variety is easy to maintain and can thrive in a variety of soil types, as long as it is well-drained and receives plenty of sunlight. It is hardy once established in a sheltered spot, with a hardiness rating of H4 (down to -10). Its evergreen nature means it will keep a low covering of foliage through winter, making it a great addition to any garden.

Agapanthus, also known as the African Lily, is a useful plant for any garden. While some varieties may be more tender, Queen Anne is proven to be reasonably hardy and only needs protection from severe conditions. Its semi-evergreen bulbous nature adds interest to the garden, with the larger leaved varieties being more suited to coastal areas.

While soil type is not a major consideration for Agapanthus, it does require a good situation with plenty of light and moist soil. It is not a particularly hungry plant, but will respond well to a feed from late spring up to flowering. To improve flowering, restrict the root growth by keeping the plant root bound. In pots, it is normal for the roots to show on the surface, and they should be kept dry over winter and watered and fed weekly once active growth is seen in spring.

Flowering for Agapanthus Queen Anne occurs between June and September, with rounded flower heads in shades of white, light blue, dark blue, and purple. Once the flowers have gone over, they will be replaced by hard, large black seeds. To prolong flowering, trim the stems back to the foliage once they have finished blooming.
