Omphalodes cappadocica
Starry Eyes
(Cappadocian Navelwort)

Omphalodes Starry Eyes is a selection from the species cappadocica with narrower leaves and larger flowers, this variety stands out with it's pretty white edged flowers. This delicate and beautiful plant starts early in the season creating rosettes of bright green leaves in February, flowers are then produced on sprawling stems from March through to May.

It can have an early dormancy but tends to remain as a clump of leaves through the rest of the season, these take on a darker purple colour as they die back in early autumn.

  • Height: Flowering to 25cm
  • Spread: Easily maintained to 50cm
  • Foliage Colour: Heart Shaped Mid Green
  • Flower Colour: Blue with white edges
  • Soil Type: Well drained, sandy, loam, chalk
  • Position: Partial Shade
  • Hardiness: Hardy H5 (-15)
  • Type: Evergreen Perennial

The situation this plant is grown in is vital to it's success, it is a native of Georgia and North East Turkey and is found growing on shady rocks and cliffs and by streams in deciduous forests. Therefore it requires a moist, shady area and does not do well in full sun, it will be happy occupying spaces under larger plants and corners or the garden with less light.

Leave the old foliage on the clump over winter to aid protection and allow the plant to die back naturally, once established it can be lifted and divided to be spread around the garden. This gem of a plant is a welcome addition to the spring garden and well worth adding to the garden.

Hardy, herbaceous perennial
