Vinca herbacea
(Herbaceous Periwinkle)
An unusual form of which not a huge amount is known, it certainly is NOT like the traditional Periwinkle we grow here which pitches down with its long stems and roots, this herbaceous Vinca is a clump forming perennial which has long, reaching shoots rambling around the border, the classic Periwinkle flower is produced from these in late summer. In the autumn the plant dies back to its clump and is full herbaceous over winter. Native to Eastern Europe growing mainly in Steppe habitats.

Vinca (Periwinkle) are great plants to use all over the garden whether its full shade, woodland, front of border or an exposed bank they will put on a great show of flowers from November right through until April. They are mostly evergreen and have a creeping habit, they are great for ground cover. Some varieties can be a little invasive like Vinca major, others are less so. Vinca minor has much smaller leaves and can be cut back from areas that you want to keep free. Vinca difformis is somewhere in between Vinca major and Vinca minor.
